The Rideau Canal is actually a continuous chain of beautiful lakes, rivers, and canal cuts stretching 202 km between Ottawa and Kingston (Ontario).

The Canal was one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century requiring the construction of 24 dams and 46 locks.

The Rideau Canal has been designated a National Historic site and is often described as the most scenic waterway in North America.

The Canal was built between 1826 and 1832 under the responsability of Lt. Colonel John By. Today it has become a tourist destination due to its beauty and tranquility.

In the winter, the canal freezes over and turns into the most famous skating rink, the Rideau Canal Skateway. Eight kilometers are cleared to become the longest outdoor ice-skating rink of the world.

In the summer canoes and motorboats ply the waters. Walkers, joggers, cyclists and in-line skaters enjoy the recreational pathways alongside.

Located at various points along the Skateway :
              - heated shelters,
              - skate and sled rentals,
              - skate-sharpening services,
              - rest areas,
              - food concessions,
              - toilets.
